The Library Staff have been collecting many pictures, news articles, aerial maps and memories from the F-3 Tornado that struck the Mechanicville/Stillwater Area on May 31, 1998. Come reminisce with us. The tshirts pictured below are from ten years ago and are NOT for sale, just for display.

I am a lifelong resident of Mechanicville and a strong supporter of the Mechanicville Public Library…but I have to say that I find it a bit distasteful that the library is selling tee shirts to “reminisce” about a tragic natural disaster that took the homes, possessions, and treasured keepsakes of many of my family and friends. To have a shirt that says “I survived the tornado of ‘98” reminds me of a tourist shirt that someone would buy on vacation or after riding a rollercoaster at the Great Escape. It just doesn’t seem very respectful to me, or sensitive to those who lost everything in the storm.

    Dear Michelle,

We at the Mechanicville District Public Library would like to thank you for being such a great supporter of the services that we offer here.

Upon receiving your message I was distraught, to think that in some way people thought we were selling t-shirts.
The Library has never even thought of such a thing. These t-shirts were sold by a group right after the Tornado of ‘98. The shirts were donated to us to put in our historical collection.

We hope this resolves any undue negative thoughts of the Library that you may have.

We look forward to your continued support.

Thank you for your comment and please continue to let us know how we are doing to serve you.

    Laura
