For many individuals nearing retirement, the decision of when to collect their Social Security
benefits has become increasingly difficult and could be one of the most important financial
decisions of a lifetime with thousands of dollars potentially at risk of forfeiture if not properly
evaluated beforehand.
This can largely be attributed to today’s increased life expectancy projections in retirement
coupled with the decline in traditional corporate pension plans. The result is often far greater
dependency upon one’s Social Security benefits than ever before. Therefore, it’s important for
individuals to not only learn the basics of Social Security, but more importantly, how to better
apply the information to their own unique situation in order to maximize their benefits.
